MAN WHO CHASED AND MURDERED HIS PARTNER WITH A MACHETE ON LA UNIÓN STREET IN VALLE DEL CAUCA HAS BEEN SENT TO PRISON.

The Attorney General’s Office successfully obtained a judicial review judge’s order to deprive Hernando de Jesús Suárez Hernández, 44, of his liberty for the murder of his former partner, which occurred on January 22 in the municipality of La Unión, Valle del Cauca.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on a public street in the El Jardín neighborhood of the aforementioned municipality. Evidence shows that, as recorded on video, the suspect chased and attacked 37-year-old Diana Carolina Serna with a machete, decapitating her. Serna died instantly.

Suárez Hernández, 44, who had been released from prison on a 72-hour parole, was caught red-handed by officers from the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the Sijín (National Police).

The Prosecutor’s Office charged him with aggravated femicide, and a supervisory judge ruled that the man must serve his sentence in prison.

So far this year, nine femicides have been recorded: five in Atlántico, two in Valle del Cauca, one in Santander, one in Antioquia, and one attempted femicide in Bogotá. In 2023, there were 410 femicides, more than one case per day.

In the same department of Valle del Cauca, the Attorney General’s Office, in isolated cases, succeeded in having judicial review judges send two men allegedly involved in physically, verbally, and psychologically abusing their former partners to prison in the municipalities of Tuluá and Zarzal.

In Tuluá, the case involves Mauricio Alejandro Baena Saavedra, who was arrested on a court order on January 17 by officers from the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the National Police.

Mauricio Alejandro Baena Saavedra allegedly physically and psychologically abused his former partner. He also allegedly threatened to kill her in Tuluá.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Baena Saavedra allegedly argued with his former partner, allegedly pulling out a firearm and placing it on a table as a sign of defiance. He also threatened to “blow her head off” and “chop her up” if his daughter made any mistake. The Prosecutor’s Office charged the suspect with aggravated domestic violence.

In a second case, which occurred in Zarzal, the Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Carlos Alberto Arce Cifuentes, 36, who is alleged to have abused and threatened his former partner; a situation that had been ongoing since 2020, when they were still living together.

Carlos Alberto Arce Cifuentes is accused of firing a firearm at his former partner’s home in Zarzal (Valle del Cauca).

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, last December, Arce Cifuentes allegedly shot at his former partner’s home, intimidating her into returning to him.

CTI (Inspection and Investigation Unit) and National Police officers arrested Arce Cifuentes, with a court order, on January 18 in Zarzal. During the hearings, the Prosecutor’s Office charged him with aggravated domestic violence.

In both cases, the judges ruled that the alleged perpetrators, who did not accept the charges brought by the Prosecutor’s Office, must serve their detention in prison.
