Julie Anne San Jose Returns to Acting in GMA and Viu’s Original Series ‘SLAY’

Renowned Sparkle GMA artist Julie Anne San Jose takes a break from hosting and reignites her passion for acting in GMA’s first Viu original series, SLAY. In this highly anticipated drama, Julie Anne portrays Liv, a charismatic, loving, and enigmatic woman with a compelling story arc. As the series unfolds, viewers will witness her character’s evolution and unravel hidden secrets that add depth to the thrilling narrative.

Julie Anne San Jose: From Hosting to Acting in SLAY

Audiences are accustomed to seeing Julie Anne San Jose performing on a weekend variety show or hosting reality talent competitions. However, in this stage of her career, she embraces a challenging role in SLAY, a collaboration between GMA and Viu, airing Mondays to Thursdays at 9:25 p.m.

In the series, she plays Liv (Olivia Baltazar), a strong and empowered woman. Liv is a devoted daughter and a loyal girlfriend to Coach Zach, also known as Z, portrayed by Derrick Monasterio. As Z’s love interest and with his shocking demise as the story unfolds, Liv becomes entangled in a mystery that keeps audiences on edge.

A Role Unlike Any Other

Julie Anne describes Liv as vastly different from her previous characters, such as Heart Fulgencio in Heartful Café and Maria Clara in Maria Clara at Ibarra.

“Liv is the oldest among the four main female characters,” Julie Anne revealed during a press conference. “She is highly aware of everything happening around her.”

Liv is part of a dynamic cast that includes Amelie (Gabbi Garcia), Sugar (Mikee Quintos), and Yana (Ysabel Ortega). While she has an affectionate and charismatic personality, Liv also harbors deep secrets unknown to her closest friends.

“With her relationship dynamics with the other girls, she is very caring. When it comes to her mother, played by Matet de Leon, they share a close yet independent bond. Liv was raised single-handedly by her mother, which shaped her strong and self-reliant character,” Julie Anne added.

A Thrilling Mystery Unfolds

As SLAY progresses, audiences will question Liv’s true motives and involvement in the central conflict. “Is she a lover or a killer?” This compelling question is introduced in the pilot episode, setting the stage for a suspenseful journey.

“You need to watch to find out whether Liv is responsible for Zach’s death or if someone else is behind it,” Julie Anne teased. “There are so many twists and surprises in store.”

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Character of Liv

Julie Anne shared insights into her preparation for the role, emphasizing the collaborative efforts behind the character development.

“We had discussions with the director, Rod Marmol, and creative consultant RJ Nuevas, who originally conceptualized the series with John Kenneth de Leon,” she said. “We were hands-on in shaping our characters, and I am grateful for this opportunity.”

She also expressed excitement about taking on a new challenge: “This is my first time playing a role like this. I can’t wait for viewers to see how Liv’s story unfolds until the very end.”

At another media event, Julie Anne admitted that she was immediately intrigued by SLAY’s murder-mystery storyline. The series allows her to further explore her acting skills and discover new depths in her craft.

Working alongside passionate creatives has made the experience even more rewarding for her. “It feels great knowing that we are creating something truly special,” she shared.
