Michael Doherty, a concerned father from Suffolk, made the difficult decision to withdraw his young daughter, Sofia, from her primary school after discovering the curriculum included what he believed to be highly inappropriate sex education topics. Among the lessons were discussions on orgasms and anal sex—subjects he felt were entirely unsuitable for children of her age. These lessons were part of the mandatory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum implemented across the UK and were taught using materials provided by an external organization, the PSHE Association.

Despite raising his concerns with the school, Doherty was met with resistance. School officials denied that the lessons contained explicit sexual content and refused to share the teaching materials with parents, citing pandemic-related restrictions. Feeling that his parental rights were being overlooked, Doherty strongly advocated for greater transparency and parental consent in sex education. He argued that parents should have a say in determining what their children are taught, particularly when it comes to sensitive and potentially controversial topics.

Frustrated by the lack of cooperation, Doherty ultimately chose to remove Sofia from the school system to ensure her education aligned with his family’s values. His decision has since contributed to a larger national conversation about the role of parents in shaping school curricula and the importance of age-appropriate learning.

Following public outcry and increasing pressure from concerned parents, the UK Department for Education conducted a review of the RSE curriculum. As a result, officials acknowledged the importance of parental access to teaching materials and transparency in sex education. In response to the controversy, the school in question removed a contentious BBC educational video from its curriculum and is currently reassessing its teaching resources.

This incident has ignited a broader debate on the balance between educational mandates and parental rights, highlighting the need for schools to involve parents in discussions about sex education. As concerns over safeguarding and child well-being continue to rise, experts and policymakers are now calling for a more open, transparent approach to ensure that sex education remains appropriate, informative, and respectful of family values.
